Streets and Roadside Maintenance This program ensures the maintenance and repair of the City's 150 mile network of local roads and related public right-of-way, including:
The City receives funding from the Florida Department of Transportation for mowing right-of-way on State roads within the City limits of Ormond Beach, including State Road 40, US 1 and A1A. In-house city personnel provide the services listed above except for right-of-way mowing and signage repair, which are contracted operations. In addition, the City contracts with Volusia County for repair and maintenance of traffic signalization located at City maintained streets and intersections.
The Environmental Systems Management Division of Public Works oversees Solid Waste collection of trash and yard waste, the Recycling program and Stormwater Maintenance.
Holiday schedule for trash and recycling: Solid waste (trash and yard waste) and Recycling collection take place every day and on all holidays - except on Christmas Day. There are no "make up" days, so if your collection day falls on Christmas Day, your trash, yard waste or recycling will be picked up on your next regular collection day. See the Environmental Systems page for more details on these services.
Solid Waste Through an exclusive franchise with a private contractor, the Collection and Disposal program provides for curbside collection of residential solid waste twice per week and yard waste once per week. The contractor also collects solid waste from all commercial businesses a minimum of three days per week to a maximum of six days per week.
The contractor disposes of all solid waste at the Volusia County solid waste facility at a current disposal rate of $30 per ton. Residential customers pay a monthly fee of $11.75 to cover the costs of collection and disposal. Commercial customers are charged $4.65 per cubic yard of solid waste disposed via two, four, six and eight cubic yard containers.
Approximately 40,000 tons of residential and commercial solid waste (including 7,000 tons of yard waste) are collected annually.
New collection schedule for residents starts Jan. 8 This includes solid household waste, yard waste and recycling. A letter was sent to all residents with maps outlining the new collection days. Resident should have received the letter by the first of the year, if not sooner. The new schedule in brief: - Residents who live west of Nova Road will have their solid waste picked up on Tuesdays and Fridays; - Residents east of Nova will have their solid waste picked up on Mondays and Thursdays. - All yard waste will now be picked up on Wednesdays throughout the city. - Check the letter and maps below for the recycling schedule. Thank you.
Recycling The Recycling program provides curbside collection of 14 different recyclable products for all residential customers on a once-per-week basis through a private contractor. The program was initiated on a citywide basis in 1991 to meet the requirements of the 1988 Solid Waste Management Act which requires cities and counties in the State of Florida to reduce the amount of solid waste disposed at landfills by 30 percent. Approximately 4,000 tons of recyclable materials are collected annually.
In addition, the program provides educational classes and materials through publications, trade shows and in-school presentations.
Stormwater Maintenance Stormwater Maintenance is responsible for maintaining the City's drainage systems in an effort to reduce flooding associated with stormwater runoff. The program responds to public concerns and needs by investigating and resolving complaints of localized flooding.
Maintenance operations are supported through a monthly fee charged to all residential and commercial units within the City limits of Ormond Beach of $6.00 per equivalent residential unit. The balance of all revenue generated by the fee that is not applied to maintenance operations, is dedicated for drainage capital improvements.
Stormwater Maintenance includes the Street Sweeping Program that cleans the city's 150-mile road network utilizing an in-house, staff-operated machine. All roads are swept once a month in an effort to aid in better drainage, reduce stormwater contamination, and reduce pedestrian or vehicle liability risks.
