New CERT program recruiting volunteers

City recruiting for new Fire Corps volunteer program

The City’s Fire Department recently started a new Fire Corps program that gives citizen volunteers the opportunity to assist firefighters and police officers with areawide emergencies, special events and administrative support.

The Fire Corps currently has about a dozen members.  All the members had taken part in the Fire Department’s training for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), but wanted to do more on a regular basis, according to Fire Corps Coordinator Capt. Scott Johnson.

CERT teaches residents how to assist their families and neighbors during emergency situations, while the Fire Corps gives participants a chance to volunteer on a regular basis for the Fire or Police Departments.

Fire Corps duties would include:  distributing food, water, ice and sandbags during hurricanes; traffic and parking control for special events or emergencies; manning first aid stations and emergency citizen information lines; assisting with CERT and CPR training; and providing administrative support.
