Explorer Post No. 480
In 2006, the Ormond Beach Fire Department started a new Fire Explorers
Post No. 480 to give young men and women some hands-on training in the
field. The program is open to high school students between the ages of
14 and 18.
Participants learn discipline, respect, first aid, CPR, first responder
techniques and other fire-related skills. Eventually they will be able
to ride on fire trucks and get hands-on training on actual calls.
Explorers is a
career education program for young men and women through the Boy Scouts
of America in cooperation with the Fire Department. The program’s
purpose is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to
prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.
Explorer posts
are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills,
citizenship, character education, and leadership experience. Parents of
Explorers are also encouraged to take part through the Learning for Life
program.
Participants
meet one day a week from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and one Saturday a month. The
cost is just $10 a year for Explorers and $7 for adults.
