Community Emergency Response Teams
Citizens who would like
to be more prepared to assist family members and neighbors in an
emergency are encouraged to consider joining the Fire Department's
Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).

CERT training
educates people about
disaster preparedness for hazards and trains them in basic disaster
response skills, such as fire safety, light search-and-rescue, team
organization, and disaster medical operations.
Using
the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members
can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event
when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
Classes
are held in the evening, once a week for eight weeks.
Fire Corps
The
Fire Corps was developed
in 2006 at the request of CERT volunteers who wanted to do more to
assist city firefighters and police officers during special events, and
emergency situations such as hurricanes.
The 40-hour program is
for volunteers who have already received CERT training. Fire Corps
includes "First Responder" training in airway management, CPR, illnesses
and traumatic injuries, childbirth, multi-casualty incidents and triage.
Fire Corps volunteers
undergo background checks and receive specialized training to assist
with administrative duties, citizen information lines, traffic control,
and canteen services.
These are volunteers who
have already received CERT training.
To
join CERT or Fire Corps, please contact Fire Captain Scott Johnson at
